GREEN WITH ENVY

... We all know that green is the color of money; US dollar (other currencies have their more exotic colors hee!)), but do you know that green can also symbolize greed, envy, and jealousy=capitalism? Noticing that the neighbors or friends are better off than we are? They dressed head to toe in expensive designer labels, renovated their impressive country house… On top of it all, they quit their job for an early retirement...grrr…so green with envy!!! ...many really suffer from this feelings. We continue to rebel and disobey; envy is afterall the only vice warned against in both the ten commandments and the seven deadly sins. It's really so ugly, but practically so hard to avoid sometimes... Even wild animals size each other up… as shown on National Geography or Animal Planet Channel. Noticing & eyeing, wanting…coveting what other people have is almost a staple in our life, almost like our treadmill of desires… keeping our economy humming and our standard of living very high indeed. Then there will be the ‘Joneses’ to keep up with. The problem is that given our rather sudden collective reliance on credit cards and home-equity borrowing to support our lifestyles - appearances are less reliable than ever..."Money is by far the No.1 stress in our society! Unfortunately some of us would still say; Huh??? Well, well, well… denial can be our very own worst enemies disguised as our best friends sometimes… Anyhow, go ahead and admire what others have, even plotting to get it ourselves one day (yeah, like whenever they go on SALE that is, hee!). But just hope that we don't get dragged into the doldrums; wondering why we can't quite keep up…so-so exhausting! And what we envy might not even exist. Even when it does, it doesn't mean the others are any more content with their lots. I am sure we have all heard the expression, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". What does it mean? Simply, it means we always think we want what we do not have. We think that what everybody else has is better than what we have…hee! Wonder if that is why grass and envy are considered to be the same color? As in the expression, "green with envy"… and "green is the color of money"… the love for money is the root of all evil?!

We may have heard about the big Squeeze on Wall Street & the Market collapsing this past week, and you were probably just like me watched the news and thinking "Oh dear… that’s bad…really bad…" but then proceeded on our oblivious merry way (what’s for dinner tonight hmmm? Did I water the Orchids today??) We all know that ignorance can truly be bliss sometimes. But in the last few days, I have learned more about it… The financial experts explained that we were about a few trades away from the entire stock market collapsing…I think most people don't know that, and that's probably for the best??? or else there would be massive-major panic and we know what happens when people panic…. Watched King Kong or Godzilla movies?…and how can I leave Titanic out??? Major-major panic galore!!! Finance and economic is definitely a boring-boring topic...especially to LENORENEVERMORE here! All I know is that we should always be cool, calm and collected…and collect as much information as possible…knowledge is always power after all… continue to be proactive. I just hope and pray that we don’t have to relive the Great Depression all over again in this country… God forbids! But the worst scenario might actually be happening… we should always be prepared for the worst and always-always hope for the best… shall we…
.
...Green Color supposedly also has both the positive & negative meaning...
let's end with the positive shall we... = money(if used wisely), growth, fertility, freshness, healing…yay!

Hm, I have flaws by the ton, but envy has never been a major struggle of mine (though there are many other things that are!) Especially not with money and expensive things, which is often what people lust after most. I've actually become quite afraid of ever being wealthy, because I'm afraid I'll let money control me... after all, I'm only human, and while some splurging here and there (should I have more money later in time) may seem innocent, it could easily turn me into a greedy monster. Not only do they sometimes say, more money, more problems, but I think the more you have the more you want... and I don't want that.

And I've never been one who's able to buy expensive things, maybe it's because I've never had the budget for it, but ah, I think I'd be eaten with guilt if I ever bought any one, say, garment (cause I do love clothes) over $100. I know people who will throw away $4,000 on a dress that they'll wear once, and then never again. Just sits in their closet. I guess because I know what poverty's like, I can't stand to see money wasted in such a way.

Anyway, I'm beginning to rant! But on a final note, yes, it's rather frightening to think we might have a second Great Depression or something of a sort, I'd like to leave that back in history!

Great topic to think about and discuss though! :)

envy itself can be both a good and bad thing.. i remember my lit. professor telling us.. one can use greed to empower them towards making something of themselves. i kinda agree, but id rather get motivated by a better reason. ;-)

Sometimes I wish clothes were actually stitched out of money so I could figure out why all of the things I like cost so darn much!
I've tried to ignore the financial crisis with "oh, it's just something happening in the US so I don't need to think about it." Clearly, as a former History major, I have studied the Great Depression and should know better. But at the same time, me sitting around worrying about the collapse of world finance doesn't actually make a difference, right?

never knew about the negative side of the colour green. Interesting and very timely topic. ;0

...right timing for this topic, just hope we would repeat the 'depression' era. Most of us weren't there to experience it, but the idea of food rationing is real depressing. That's a good thought; US dollar-why green???

Green isn't a favourite color of mine... but anyway, on envy... It's said to be our national sin. However, in Spanish there's also the expression "envidia sana", meaning "healthy envy"... which is used when you feel envy of someone or something but you don't actually want to take it from anybody or do any harm. We use this expression a lot...

Thanks for commenting in my blog.

Green.... envy, money... why not hope?
Here we say that green is also related to hope.
If one's going to an exam, well "dress something green to give hope".....
I think there's many meanings for colours and that can be different according to the culture.

This is a great post, I'm worried about this state of things, specialy in financial markets.
We can enter in a big recession, and my country is such a small one that everything takes it from stability.

I certainly agree that "knowledge is always power after all". So I think that people must be awear of what's happening. And are posts like this that can call attention to those things.

I do love clothes, but I'm also consciencious that it's a waist of money to buy expensive things that can be bought for much less. My budget doesn't let me buy those designer pieces for lots of money, but if I had it I would never spend it that way

Again great post.
Keep smiling dear and think of green as hope too ;)

Green makes me think of fields of grass, lovely trees and lush gardens--and then there is green. Money, I think is a neutral, and is innocent of any colour or consequence---it is our relationship that determines how we colour money.
A thought provoking post, as usual!

When I see green I think about trees and grass. Nature. It's too bad people see jealousy or money instead. How boring, no? Thanks for your compliments and comments. Still having trouble with this cold. Orange juice and lots of soup and tea for me! :)

Yep, a depression is probably not far behind, considering the fact that many families have been living in depressive conditions since way before the government decided to own up to the fact that this country was in a recession.

I like your post on Green. The visuals are excellent too. Love it love it love it! Green has never been my color but it usually exemplifies all things representative of PEACE. Green movements, going green, grren green grasslands... though I don't know how "green with envy" came about! Keep up your good efforts and interesting reads, Lenorenevermore! - Debz

the economy is so funched up.
..
I never related green with envy, don't know why.

but how werid is it that green is both money and envy, but also nature and health, complete opposites.
I have a theory of why is that.
the primary colors are blue, red and yellow. green in a combination of blue (the color with the most black in it) and yellow (the color
with most white in it) black = envy and money and white = nature and health.
therefore green for me represent ying a yang.
lol werid theory.

The scope of my intrigue with green unfortunately doesn't expand past: Green makes me look like a brocolli :P

But yes there are some connotations relevant to society in regards to this colour. But i have heard green linked to envy (green-eyed monster) and the money comparison is very sensical.

I've never been able to purchase anything extravagent. In fact i only shop in op-shops or vintage stores (which are basically the same) only because it really isn't necessary.

Eep, better leave now. Beckett is squaking lol

I like the color of American money. Its a solid respectable green color. Have you ever seen Australian money? Its like they vomited a rainbow.

Does Ray Beldner use actual greenbacks?
