errrrr...Furoshiki what??!
~Well...the Japanese Furoshiki is an elegant traditional cloth wrapping used for special presents or objects. The Furoshiki is certainly a gift unto itself...reusable, multi-purpose and is an essential tool in Japanese life & culture, often used as a shopping bag, wall hanging or table runner, or even as a lovely scarf! One of the symbols of traditional Japanese culture, and puts an accent on taking great care of things. Although it's an old tradition, it’s still very much popular among the Japanese and creative-stylish people in the west as well. ~Let’s take a look at various style of furoshiki, hope to get more inspirations for our own creative Holiday gift wrapping this season...

As one Japanese woman, I feel grateful that you've posted "furoshiki". I keep several furoshiki in my closet drawer. It's fun to choose the right one for each occasion. Today smaller size is used much in common among girls to wrap their lunch boxes to bring with them to schools and offices.
I do think it's charming.
Sadly I don't know anyone who would appreciate a gift made of thrift shop finds.
I definitely would though.

My daughter goes to school with a lunch box wrapped with furoshiki (tiny one), so that her lunch box doesn't open. She loves it - I'm proud of it.

i think those are great! better for the environment, people can keep the wrapping for something else after. i always stand aghast at the clear wastefulness of wrapping paper.

my grandmother sewed cloth wrapping for our presents many years ago and still uses them for our presents to this day! very eco-friendly indeed!

So magnificently wrapped!! I remember I went to Japan as a young 'un with my folks and the one thing that has stuck in my mind was the divine presentation of everything from sushi lunch boxes to packets of coloured pencils etc I still have quite a few of the darling little boxes I bought on that trip - However, I didn't see these beauties!!! I did this for the first time last year for gifts and it was a huge hit! I am a mad collector of scarves and I'm not big on wrapping with the cutting and tape..bah hehe so I just had a lightbulb moment and it looks soooo nice and plus its good for the environment!!! Ooohhh...I very much like the fabric gift wrap. One of my co-workers was suggesting using those sheer, novelty towels so the person could have a handy kitchen gift after unwrapping as well.

Actually all japanese stuff is quite a marvellous and very cute stuff... I remenber even to have stayed hours in a simple supermarket, looking at the nooddles bgas, the packaging of everything....
